Zukunftsmusik

The motto of the Beethovenfest 2011 is "Music for the Future. Beethoven, Liszt and Innovation in Music". The Beethovenfest Bonn 2011 is under the patronage of the State Premier of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hannelore Kraft.

Ask The Orchestra

Music fans, first-timers and complete strangers to the Bethovenfest will be able to tweet their questions directly to members of three world-class orchestras – the London Symphony Orchestra, Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the Beethoven Orchester Bonn – for an interesting discussion about the "Music for the Future" and thus play an interactive role in the festival.
It is an opportunity for orchestras and the musicians to connect to their community and share their stories, loves and passions, one tweet at a time. We will also release a "Twinterview" with Marc van Bree, a well-rounded Dutch marketing communications professional, who provided the first of these "Twitter Talks" in 2010. We invite you to participate remotely just before 6:00pm CET on Saturday. The Q&A "Twevent" will be about two hours long at most. We are looking forward to your questions and opinions.

Music for the Future – does the classical concert ritual have a future at all?
Only if we work with the younger generation, classical music will have future.
The orchestra as a form of organization  – democracy or hierarchy?
Tours and guest appearances are the inspiring moments in the life of an orchestra musician.

Twinterview with Marc van Bree @mcmvanbree
about orchestras and social web

Q: @beethovenfest Now that the social media have become mainstream, is the potential really being exploited for art?
A: @mcmvanbree This might sound cheesy, but the potential of social media is really quite unlimited. So the answer is no.
A: @mcmvanbree Many organizations use social media particularly well, but most are still not putting in the investment it deserves (including yours truly!)

Q: @beethovenfest How many channels should an orchestra use in social media marketing?
A: @mcmvanbree That entirely depends on what you want to achieve, but I would suggest at least Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. And not in silos!
A: @mcmvanbree Think about the story you want to tell and then research what channels are best to tell that story.
A: @mcmvanbree Keep in mind, without an institutional website offering a solid marketing foundation you can’t optimize your use of social media channels.

Q: @beethovenfest Should orchestras bank more on crowd-funding in future?
A: @mcmvanbree Don’t use it for general annual fund solicitations. Think about projects that are particularly suited with a dedicated base of support.
A: @mcmvanbree Examples can include: support for a special production; bringing a famous artist to a concert hall; presenting a new work.
A: @mcmvanbree I love this idea from the Palm Beach Opera (http://tinyurl.com/3av2h8g) but you can see how hard it is! Especially with a broad, general campaign.

Q: @beethovenfest Location-based services: is this just a gimmick for orchestras, or are they now part of the marketing mix? And how can they be seriously deployed?
A: @mcmvanbree Although increasing, usage of location-based services is not very widespread yet.
A: @mcmvanbree Now that Facebook is making it a bigger part of their platform, you should pay attention.
A: @mcmvanbree Other than using incentives for frequent attenders, or a parking or drink special for those who check in, you should think much more creatively.
A: @mcmvanbree I quite like SCVNGR (http://www.scvngr.com/). You can think up all kinds of fun stuff!

Q: @beethovenfest The Berlin Philharmonic has invited people to a Mahler remix. What about this idea? Will it really bring about the hoped-for rejuvenation?
A: @mcmvanbree First of all, I think it is a mistake to only think of social media or the Internet in terms of rejuvenation of the classical music audience.
A: @mcmvanbree However, look at the success of the YouTube Symphony and the “Twitter Opera” at the Royal Opera House!
A: @mcmvanbree Involving fans in the creation process is a marvellous thing! Not for every concert or everything you do, but it certainly has its place.

Q: @beethovenfest How will the mobile internet change concert-going habits?
A: @mcmvanbree Of course, concert habits now are not the same as in the 1800s. Concert habits in another 100 years are not going to be the same either.
A: @mcmvanbree And I might be wrong, but I don’t necessarily see the mobile internet itself change concert habits immediately.
A: @mcmvanbree Mobile internet is evolving societal habits, which in turn will evolve concert habits. But I don’t think it’s a matter of a light switch.
A: @mcmvanbree Using mobile internet in concerts shouldn’t be gimmicky. And again, it’s not for every concert or everything you do, but it can have a place.

Summary of the discussion
#asktheorchestra

Q: @didgoossens What new concert formats would you suggest in order to maybe attract more younger people in concert halls?
A: @BOstertag Pick younger people up where they musically are and do something where they can participate (*1)
Q: @NGC6544 Like having a concert with Mozart and Soul- or Rapmusic?
A: @BOstertag Definitely, we do so on a regularly basis with pupils from Bremen and a composer/arranger
A: @BOstertag ...for example like in our show ›Melody of Life‹:

(*1)
Q: @Hehsu Und was konkret tun Sie "do something where they can participate"?
A: @BOstertag Zum Beispiel eine Show mit Schülern und ihren eigenen Kompositionen: bit.ly/oP3IzN
Q: @Hehsu Super! Und wie alt sind die Schüler? Tschuldigung, hab die Antwort erst jetzt entdeckt ;-)
A: @BOstertag Die Schüler sind zwischen 11 und 18 Jahren alt.
A: @Hehsu Danke!
A: @Hehsu Gerne! Ehre, wem Ehre gebührt ;-)

Q: @quiksnowboard7 In your opinion as musicians, what is the most difficult symphony to play, as well as conduct?
A: @londonsymphony Impossible to say! Some conductors make some easy symphonies hard! Gurrelieder is so massive its hard to get together though
Q: @quiksnowboard7 Fair enough. Change of tone, is there a personal fave that the orchestra enjoys performing?
A: @maxinekwokadams For me it would be Mahler symphonies, film music and russian rep definitly!
A: @quiksnowboard7 You are very considerate for answering my Q, thank you!
A: @BOstertag Especially Beethoven and Schumann with our chief-conductor Paavo Järvi http://bit.ly/pYakut
A: @quiksnowboard7 Thanks for responding to the Q, I do appreciate it!
A: @londonsymphony Russian rep with Valery, Bruckner with Haitink and Harry Potter with Desplat

Q: @NGC6544 How old was the youngest visitor in a concert?
A: @londonsymphony We do concerts for children too. My daughter came in utero and when she was 2 weeks old!
Q: @NGC6544 You have concerts for children in utero? ;-)
A: @londonsymphony They get free tickets if they come with an adult :-)
A: @NGC6544 That's nice.

Q: @BBB_Mrs How much (or little) do orchestral musicians practise at home, outside of rehearsals?
A: @maxinekwokadams Depends how difficult the orch parts are coming up! Ariel Symphony.. Neilsen 6!&what solo/chamber stuff I need2prepare for example.
A: @BBB_Mrs Thanks! I saw your tweets on Nielsen 6 a while ago.
A: @maxinekwokadams Uh that was NOT fun to practise.. very unviolinistic..
A: @BOstertag It depends some musicians need more practice, some need less...

Q: @frank_tentler How many A-orchestras will we lose in germany until 2020?
A: @BOstertag Hopefully not a single one
Q: @NGC6544 I'm not so sure - a lot of cities are under financial stress at the moment...
A: @BOstertag You never can be sure about what will be in 9 years..
A: @LGeiger_BOB If the society does not appreciate the value of orchestras, a lot of them will die or will be reduced.
A: @BOstertag Because of that reason educational work is extremely important

A: @BOstertag Sehr wichtig.
A: @LGeiger_BOB Sehr wichtig. Macht Musik verständlicher. Man kann seinen eigenen Horizont erweitern.

Q: @KuWiWege Should concert formats be changed with regard to young people or audiences that don't "know" classical music?
A: @LGeiger_BOB Yes, they should. It is difficult to change structures because the concerts are planned several years in advance
A: @BOstertag Not generally, but there definitely should be formats for younger and "non-classicals" with an introduction e.g.
A: @londonsymphony and I agree with that!

Q: @NGC6544You are very active in the social networks - do you have a Social Media Manager for that? Or is it PR?
A: @londonsymphony Jo in the office does a lot, but I am principal flute and write the blog too and update FB and twitter.

Q: @NGC6544 What was the last instrument that you bought for the orchestra?
A: @londonsymphony A flute but apart from that we bought some nice violins
Q: @NGC6544 A special kind of flute?
A: @londonsymphony An Altus AL model. Very special
A: @BOstertag Last instrument was a Steinway-piano with help from supporters of the orchestra. Soloists enjoy it

Q: @F_Wittich In future will we no longer be hearing music live or only online, as in the Digital Concert Hall?
A: @londonsymphony Ithink that people will always want to gather together for a communal experience in a concert? Its human I think
A: @londonsymphony I don't think you can replicate the live experience online yet-and hopefully never
A: @BOstertag I totally agree with that

Q: @NGC6544 Which solo in a concert is the most complicated for your instrument?
A: @maxinekwokadams like Missa solemnis is hard as U can't hide behind virtuosity.. It has to be pure and beautiful with no pyrotechnics
A: @maxinekwokadams not being a leader I can't answer with great authority.. but I think Also sprach is right up there! Also a "simple" sounding solo

A: @BOstertag ...

Q: @quiksnowboard7 Is there a composer whose works you have not yet to perform in your career, but would like to?
A: @londonsymphony erm....after star wars-no :-)
A: @londonsymphony Seriously, I'd like to do more Thomas Ades. I love his music but haven't done much yet
A: @maxinekwokadams I loved the Powder her Face Suite he conducted some months ago. I think he returns in 2012 :-)
A: @BOstertag Thomas Ades: yes. We enjoyed doing his Opera "Powder her face"!
A: @maxinekwokadams Not sure about composer, but I really want to play Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake!
A: @quiksnowboard7 Four Acts of shear brilliance! Great choice!
A: @maxinekwokadams I always loved ballet music as a kid. We don't play it often but when we do, I'm so happy!
A: @quiksnowboard7 I have a few classical musicians in my family background & was lucky as a child 2 see Previn conduct the LSO several times!
A: @maxinekwokadams Wow that must have been great! I wish I had seen him in his prime. He's pretty frail now
A: @quiksnowboard7 Was those performances as a child that turned me onto Classical music, that & my Grandmother was an Opera voice coach!

Q: @KuWiWege Was hilft bei Lampenfieber? Any tipps against stagefright?
A: @maxinekwokadams I find deep breathing and keeping things in perspective helps! One Japan tour I was nervous and we visited the Hiroshima museum.
A: @maxinekwokadams I realised that music is meant to be enjoyed and a little bow shake is not the end of the world!
A: @KuWiWege That's a healthy mindset! But sometimes hard to put into practice, I guess. Thx!
A: @londonsymphony I dont have a bow, but vibrato can get a bit out of control! You get used to nerves. A bit anyway
A: @BOstertag Same for me: non-planned vibrato without a bow can happen at performances...
A: @maxinekwokadams Playing is preferable2public speaking! I think I'm usually more edgy after the summer break when we've been off for 3 wks..
A: @BOstertag Das muss jeder selbst herausfinden. Manchen helfen Bananen, anderen Körperübungen wie Spiraldynamik oder Yoga
A: @NGC6544 Spiraldynamik muss ich wohl mal gleich googlen gehen...
A: @BOstertag Mach mal, das lohnt auf jeden Fall!
A: @NGC6544 Spiraldynamik: http://bit.ly/qIO5Qp
A: @BOstertag Wir haben unseren nächsten Workshop im November. Hilft uns u.a. fit zu bleiben
A: @KuWiWege Uff.

Quotes
The London Symphony Orchestra is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading orchestras. Since its formation in 1904, it has always attracted excellent players from all over the world, many of whom have flourishing solo, chamber music and teaching careers alongside their orchestral work. The LSO’s roster of soloists and conductors is second to none, including Principal Conductor Valery Gergiev, LSO President Sir Colin Davis, and Daniel Harding and Michael Tilson Thomas as Principal Guest Conductors.

The fact that tradition and modernity are not mutually exclusive is demonstrated not just by the current season’s programme of the Beethoven Orchester Bonn. The orchestra’s reputation as the preserver of the established has proved itself ever since the orchestra was founded and has now become stronger. At guest performances in and outside of Germany this orchestra carries with it the reputation of the city of Bonn as the cradle of great minds and as the committed supporter of all things cultural.
